ryan-newman-airborne-soldiersNASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ryan Newman got a first-hand lesson at firing weapons, riding in a combat vehicles, and learning about Airborne School from Soldiers stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia.

"This was my third visit to an Army post this year and each one has been pretty remarkable," Newman said. "At each of the visits I not only marveled at the technology, detail and training, but also enjoyed sharing stories with our Soldiers. We did a lot of neat things at Fort Benning, including firing some cool weapons. The entire day was relaxing and fun. Getting a first-hand view of the behind-the-scenes training always gives me a greater appreciation of our Army Strong Soldiers."

Newman also paid a visit to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC and Fort Jackson in South Carolina earlier this year.

While at the base, Newman also signed autographs for base personnel and their families.ryan-newman

Despite the excitement of the day, the upcoming race in Atlanta and the Chase for the Sprint Cup remained on his mind.

"Except for a few drivers safely in the top-12, teams are counting points and estimating what needs to be accomplished to secure a Chase spot," Newman said. "It's crunch time. But at the same time you have to be careful because you don't want to over think the situation. The key is to continue to do what you've been doing. I think we all have our brief moments of anxiety since it's a major accomplishment to qualify for the Chase."

Newman is currently 7th in the point standings while his teammate and car owner Tony Stewart is at the top of the charts. Unfortunately, Newman has yet to get a win in his U.S. Army/Haas Automation Chevrolet so far this season.

However, he has a pretty good record at Atlanta Motor Speedway including one top-five, four top-10s and seven poles.

Perhaps the visit with the Soldiers will give Newman the extra boost he needs to get his No. 39 into Victory Lane this weekend.
