Juan Pablo Montoya was the fastest in the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. He ran a fast lap of 28.749 seconds at a speed of 132.485mph. Richard Childress Racing teammates Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer finished the practice session 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Neither driver is a Chase contender.
 Tony Stewart, who was the points leader going into last weekend’s race in Richmond, ended up 4th in the session with a lap time of 28.794 seconds. Current points leader Mark Martin was on Stewart’s heels with a fast lap of 28.804 seconds. Non-Chasers A.J. Allmendinger and Kyle Busch finished the session in 7th and 8th, respectively. They were sandwiched between Kurt Busch and defending champion Jimmie Johnson, both drivers are in the Chase. Denny Hamlin, who currently sits 4th in the point standings, ended the session in 10th. The rest of the Chasers, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards, finished 11th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 21st and 35th.
