Robert “Red” Byron earned a lot of NASCAR firsts.

Despite an injury he sustained during World War II, Byron won the first NASCAR race in 1948 at Daytona Beach and then went on to win the first season championship in NASCAR’s modified division that year. The following year he won the first series title in the Strictly Stock division, the early version of today’s Sprint Cup Series.

He had a short but illustrious NASCAR career and has become a legend in the sport of auto racing.

This is the 3rd entry in the 25 video Hall of Fame Nominees Series by Rick Hodson.
