What Richard Petty is to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Richie Evans is to NASCAR Modified racing.
Evans dominated the series over 13 years from the early 1970’s to the mid-80’s. Overall, he won nine series titles, eight of which came in consecutive years from ’78 to ’85, and won hundreds of races.
His best year was 1979, when he won 37 of the season’s 60 races; true domination at its finest.
Unfortunately, Evans life was cut short when he was fatally injured at Martinsville Speedway after a crash in practice on October 24, 1985. He had clinched his ninth championship at the event before to Martinsville.
