Eight Races Left As Cup Conquers Kansas
Sunday, 04 October 2009 11:08

jimmie-johnsonWith only eight races left in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, including today’s Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods at Kansas Speedway, all eyes are on the Chase for the Sprint Cup contenders.

Hendrick Motorsports drivers Mark Martin and defending Series champion Jimmie Johnson are one and two in the point standings, only 10 points apart heading into today’s race.

Hendrick Motorsports also swept the top-three spots in qualifying, the other two managed top-11 starting spots, and Johnson is the defending champion of this race, which combined give the team a good advantage for taking the checkers today.

In the eight past races at the track, Johnson, Martin and their teammate Jeff Gordon have won four of the events. Chasers Greg Biffle, Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have each won one. Joe Nemechek is the only past winner at Kansas who is not a contender in the Chase for the Sprint Cup this year.

Even with an obvious advantage, that still may give the Hendrick drivers some trouble today.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who is currently third in points and has been very consistent in recent weeks, will take the green in the 14th position.

Other Chasers in the top-15 are Stewart in 5th, Kasey Kahne in 6th and Vickers in 12th.

The Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods is scheduled to broadcast at 1pm ET today on ABC.
