After winning the race off of pit road on lap 239, Tony Stewart took the race lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods at Kansas Speedway and never faltered.
Fellow Chase for the Sprint Cup contender Jeff Gordon tried to overtake Stewart in the closing laps but Stewart took the checkers by a 0.894 second margin of victory.
It is Stewart’s fourth victory this season. “He was getting bigger,” Stewart said of Jeff Gordon in his rear view mirror at the end of the race. “The big thing was just not driving the tires off the thing… we didn’t leave too much out there.” He also mentioned in Victory Lane that his win would make him late for the dirt late model race he was scheduled to run in Iowa tonight. Chase contenders made up ten of the top-11 finishing positions. Behind Stewart and Gordon came Greg Biffle in 3rd, Juan Pablo Montoya in 4th and Denny Hamlin in 5th. Kasey Kahne and points leader Mark Martin finished 6th and 7th, respectively. The only non-Chaser, David Reutimann, finished 8th in front of Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards. Kurt Busch finished 11th.
The other two Chasers were spread out through the rest of the field; Stewart’s teammate Ryan Newman ended up 22nd. Brian Vickers was the lowest finishing contender, after losing his motor he finished a very disappointing 37th. The poor finished made Vickers lose two spots in the standings and is now 12th out of the 12 contenders. Martin is still holding on to the points lead by 18 points over Johnson. Next weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be in California for the Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway, the 4th race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. MORE NASCAR NEWS
