Stewart Wins Kansas, Martin Stretches Point Lead

tony-stewartTony Stewart won his fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race of 2009 on Sunday, taking the lead with 28 laps remaining in the Price Chopper 400 and beating Jeff Gordon to the finish line by 0.894 seconds to become the second multi-race winner at the Kansas Speedway. 

 

"So proud of these guys at SHR," Stewart said in Victory Lane. "To win a manufacturers title for Chevy in this race is awesome too. Just an awesome day."

 

 

Gordon passed Greg Biffle on lap 254 of the 267 lap event to take over second, chopping Stewart's lead to .5 seconds with five to go.

 

"Still a great day for the DuPont Chevrolet," Gordon said of his runnerup finish. "We came a long ways, that shows what kind of great team we have. We were really far off at the beginning of this race."

Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin completed the top five finishers.

 

Mark Martin finished seventh in his #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and stretched his point lead to 18 over Jimmie Johnson in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Johnson finished ninth in the Price Chopper 400.

 

"We didn't quite have it nailed down," Martin said of his performane on Sunday. "Our car was just a little bit off of some of the guys out there and our race team fought really hard. We fought for everything we got today. It's the first time we've missed it that much in a while and your going to have that. We're still fighting, hard as we can go."

 

Two-time champ Stewart is currently fourth in the Chase point standings and trails Martin by 67 points.
