Glenn “Fireball” Roberts was the first superstar of NASCAR.
Roberts accumulated 33 wins, seven at Daytona International Speedway, and 22-2nd place finishes over his 16 season career. He was arguably the greatest driver to never win a NASCAR championship.
Over the years he won some of the sport’s most prestigious events including the Daytona 500 and the Southern 500. He set numerous records at different tracks and led an astounding 1,644 laps at Darlington Raceway.
In the 1964 World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Roberts was involved in a fiery crash and was severely burned. Somehow he survived the crash that day but he succumbed to pneumonia just a little over a month after the incident.
As they say, the good die young and Roberts was one of the greatest.
