The “Clown Prince of Stock Car Racing”, Joe Weatherly was as entertaining off the track as he was on it.
Known for his practical jokes, Weatherly was all business on the track and he proved it by winning two consecutive Cup Series championships in 1962 and ’63.
After beginning his racing career on two wheels racing AMA, Weatherly took to the NASCAR Modified division and won 101 races there. He also raced in the Convertible Division for three years before advancing to Cup.
He had a natural ability for all kinds of racing and a versatility that made him a true success.
