Known for his fiery, competitive personality, Cale Yarborough helped attract fans to NASCAR.
Yarborough dominated the sport in the late 1970’s when he won three consecutive Cup championships from ’76 through ’78; a record that had been unmatched until Jimmie Johnson earned his third consecutive title last year.
He earned 83 victories in his career which ranks him fifth on the all-time list. Four of those wins were in the Daytona 500 which puts him second to Richard Petty for most wins in that event.
One of the most memorable events in Yarborough’s career was the 1979 Daytona 500. Following an on-track altercation, brothers Bobby and Donnie Allison and Yarborough began fighting in the infield. The race was the first completely televised event for NASCAR and the fight drew new fans to the sport and brought NASCAR into the modern era.
