Jimmie Johnson won the NASCAR Banking 500 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway Saturday night after passing teammate Jeff Gordon on lap 321 of the 334 lap race to post his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the year.
"We got it right when it counted." Johnson said after the race. "We had a great pit stop at the end, they got us out front. That was really the deal there."
The three-time champion beat Gordon off pit road after the leaders made their final stop of the night and lined up for the lap 317 restart. Gordon battled Johnson, taking the lead on 319 before fading to fourth at the finish. "That last restart, man I had my hands full," Johnson explained. "I was loose on the inside of him, had a couple moments I had to fall in behind him, collect my thoughts and try to find another way by him. Once I cleared him I knew we would be in good shape but if he could have held on three or four more laps in front of me I could have been to tight and not able to get by."
Johnson led 92 laps of the event and stretched his point lead to 90 over Mark Martin. Martin, like many of the Chase contenders, had an off night and finished 17th. "We're only halfway through this thing, so many things can happen," Johnson said of the Chase point standings. Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Joey Logano completed the top five finishers. Chase drivers Kurt Busch finished 10th, Ruan Newman 11th, Tony Stewart 13th, Greg Biffle 16th, Brian Vickers 34th, Juan Pablo Montoya 35th, Carl Edwards 39th and Denny Hamlin 42nd. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will make their next stop at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia for the Tums Fast Relief 500 next Sunday, October 25. MORE NASCAR NEWS
