The top-three finishers in yesterday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series TUMS Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway were very pleased with their performances; Denny Hamlin more than the others since he crossed the stripe first but Jimmie Johnson was certainly a close second since his runner-up finish gained him 28 points on Mark Martin in the point standings.
Now, Johnson has a whopping 118 point lead over second place Martin, the second largest margin between first and second place at this point in the season since the Chase was implemented.
While the top four drivers in the standings maintained their points positions, half of the Chase drivers lost or gained at least one position after this race in Martinsville. Montoya’s third place finish earned him the 5th spot in the standings, bumping Kurt Busch back to 6th. Ryan Newman and Greg Biffle swapped positions for 7th and 8th, respectively, and Denny Hamlin moved up two places to 9th while Kasey Kahne dropped two spots to 11th.
Carl Edwards stayed in between the Hamlin-Kahne sandwich in 10th place and Brian Vickers remains 12th as the Cup Series heads to Talladega for the AMP Energy 500.
