Kurt Busch Beats Brother Busch; Johnson Wrecks

kurt-buschThe NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway started off with a bang.

Series points leader Jimmie Johnson in his No. 48 Lowe’s/KOBALT Tools Chevrolet wrecked with Sam Hornish Jr. only three laps into the event.

Going into today’s race, Johnson had a 184 point lead over second place Mark Martin in the point standings and most people were considering the championship pretty much wrapped up. The wreck changed everything.

Immediately after the incident, as Johnson’s car was being pieced back together in his garage, Jeff Gordon was second in points just over 30 points behind Johnson and Martin was 3rd just over 80 points out of 1st.

Johnson was able to return to the track and ultimately finished 38th. In the end, he was able to maintain a 73 point lead over Martin in the points.

“It’s still a respectable lead, ya know 73 (points) with two (races) to go is a good place to be in,” Johnson said after the race. “We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”jimmie-johnson

The other big disappointment of the weekend was when Kyle Busch ran out of fuel with two laps to go. Busch dominated the rest of the weekend with wins in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Busch in his No. 18 M&M’s Toyota led the most laps in the Cup race but lost the race to his brother Kurt Busch in his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge due to fuel mileage. Kyle Busch finished 11th and his brothers car had to be pushed to Victory Lane after running out of fuel on his backward victory lap.

“I was confident in my guy’s numbers. They gave me what I needed to win today,” Kurt Busch said in Victory Lane. “That was the first true time Kyle (Busch) and I raced for a victory together like this… it was bittersweet. I was rooting for him but at the same time it was sweet for us.”

Denny Hamlin finished 2nd to the elder Busch, followed by Matt Kenseth, Martin and Kevin Harvick.

Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer finished 6th and 7th, respectively, while Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton and A.J. Allmendinger rounded out the top-10.
