195 is the magic NASCAR number this weekend.
With two races left in the 2009 NASCAR season, champions could be announced at Phoenix rather than Homestead if the point leader is at least 195 points over second place at the end of the series’ event in the Valley of the Sun. This scenario is a good possibility in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Currently, Ron Hornaday leads Matt Crafton by 197 points in the Truck Series, while Kyle Busch has a whopping 272 point margin over Carl Edwards in the Nationwide Series. Should these margins remain the same, or increase at Phoenix this weekend, the two drivers will be named the champions of those series even before the championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In the Sprint Cup Series, Jimmie Johnson maintained a 73 point lead over Mark Martin despite his troubles at Texas. It is a long shot, but it is possible that Johnson could come away from Phoenix with a 195 point lead. Had the wreck this past weekend not happened, it would have been a much better chance that all three series would wrap up their championship battles before the last race of the season. Hardcore race fans in attendance at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend could get a much bigger treat than they expected if there is a championship celebration or two on top of the on track racing action.
