The Weekend Ahead At Phoenix
Written by Troy Blalock
Thursday, 12 November 2009 23:00

ron-hornadayAs the top-three NASCAR divisions head to Phoenix International Raceway for the second to last races of the 2009 season, one thing is weighing heavy on everyone’s minds.

The championship.

Ron Hornaday is looking to seal up his 4th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship this weekend even before the season ending race at Homestead-Miami next weekend. As long as his 197 point lead over Matt Crafton does not go below 195 points when the checkered flag flies Friday night, Hornaday will be crowned champion a week early.

Kyle Busch is also on the verge of earning his first NASCAR championship in the Nationwide Series. He currently has a 247 point lead over Carl Edwards in the series point standings, as long as he leads by 195 points when Saturday’s race is over he will seal the deal right then and there.kyle-busch

In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Jimmie Johnson has a 73 point lead over Mark Martin going into Sunday’s Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. 195 points is also the magic number for Johnson so he may have to stick it out for another week until the final race in Florida is completed. With so many people still mathematically in contention for the Cup title, it could still be anyone’s championship at this point.
