NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson made a stop in his home state of California yesterday for a series of events including a visit to the elementary school he attended and a fan fest with troops at Camp Pendleton.

While at Crest Elementary in El Cajon, CA, Johnson and his wife Chandra announced they would be donating nearly $1 million through 11 grants to schools in the area through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. The Foundation also gave grants to six schools in Oklahoma, Chandra’s home state, and nine schools in North Carolina.

The grants are to be used for science and technology programs, accelerated reading programs, outdoor classrooms, athletic facilities and other similar initiatives.

Johnson then headed to U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for a meet-and-greet with Marines and their families. A concert by Saving Abel was also part of the event.
