Last fall, NASCAR drivers Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards announced their wives were expecting.
Both drivers are first-time fathers and both babies are expected in February which could be difficult on both men being that the Daytona 500 is scheduled for February 14th. When asked if he would miss the Great American Race for the birth of his daughter, Edwards was clearly torn. “Oh man, no, no I don’t think so. I don’t know that’s a really tough question.”
However, he did say that they will not induce labor to ensure his participation in the birth. “We’re just going to let nature take it’s course. See what happens,” he said. “I did suggest taking a doctor to the races and that didn’t go over so well but I figured that would be a fail-safe way to cover our bases but she’s going to stay in Missouri.” Sadler and his wife Amanda have also debated their options on the subject. “We’ve got a lot of great doctors that are helping us and working on it,” Sadler said. “We’re going to make sure that I can be there and be a part of this great experience.” But, as mutual players in the recent NASCAR baby boom, Sadler and Edwards have very different opinions on the future relationship their two children may have. If the ultrasounds prove correct, Sadler will have a bouncing baby boy and Edwards will understand the term ‘daddy’s girl’. “We’ve talked a little bit being that we’re now on the same Ford team,” Sadler said. “I told him (Edwards) that it’s cool if his little girl and my little boy want to play and become really good friends at the racetrack and stuff like that that’s great. I don’t know how well he liked that I idea.” Edwards does not like that idea at all. “I’ve already told Elliott he’s keeping his son away from my daughter,” Edwards said with a huge grin. “If it is a girl, she’s definitely not going to be hanging out with little Sadler.” More than likely both children will eventually be playing together in the infield on Sunday’s along with Matt Kenseth’s daughter Kaylin who was born last July and Jimmie and Chandra Johnson’s bundle of joy who is expected this summer.
