NASCAR has listened to the fans and the drivers by the series of town hall style meetings they hosted during the 2009 season. The fans didn’t like the look of a wing on the back of a stockcar and the drivers didn’t like the way the car handled, so NASCAR stepped in.
Coming sometime during the 2010 season, NASCAR is introducing the Car of Tomorrow with a spoiler, and not a wing. Today NASCAR will introduce the rule change as part of the Sprint Media Tour that is taking place this week in the Charlotte area.
Earlier this week four drivers got the chance to test the car with a spoiler for the first time. Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, and Greg Biffle all took part in the Goodyear tire test at Texas Motor Speedway. Vickers said; “I thought it (spoiler) was good.” He went on to say; “We haven't been in a lot of traffic yet, so the big question is how it's going to handle in traffic.” The spoiler is supposed to improve the handling in traffic versus the wing, but with it not being tested yet in heavy traffic we have yet to know. NASCAR sent out a memo Monday to teams with the specifications. The spoiler will be one piece all together stretching out to 64½-inches across. With the chassis on six to eight inch blocks, the ground clearance from the top of the spoiler to the ground is 43.52-inches. It will be fixed at 70 degrees and made out of 3/16-inch thick aluminum. With these modifications the car also has to be altered with the fuel filler being relocated forward and to the left lower tip of the spoiler. On both sides, there will be four inch long extensions to the quaterpanels towards the ground at the rear wheel opening. At Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR will host an open test for all teams on March the 23rd and the 24th. With Charlotte being a 1.5 mile oval like Texas Motor Speedway, we could see the spoiler debut on the Car of Tomorrow come the Samsung Mobile 500 which is scheduled for April 18th at 1p.m. MORE NASCAR NEWS
