Trevor Bayne – Adrenaline Junkie
Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:00

trevor-bayneTrevor Bayne is a fairly fresh face in NASCAR. After participating in a driver development program for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2008, making his Nationwide Series debut last March in Jimmy Means’ No. 52 car and then running three races for Michael Waltrip Racing, this young driver has begun to make a name for himself in this sport.

However, what most people do not know about Bayne is that off the track he is a true adrenaline junkie.

In addition to his need for speed behind the wheel of a race car, Bayne lists wakeboarding and snowboarding on his list of passions.

“We wakeboard every day,” he said. “We tried to go the other day but our boat was stuck in ice so we couldn’t get on the water so we went snowboarding instead. We try to have as much fun as we can all the time.”

Bayne’s exciting way of life is not just a hobby, it is literally a part of him.

“I went to this guy in Charlotte and he’s a sports therapist. When I got my charts back on my personality chart the thrill seeking was through the roof and he was like ‘dude, you’ve got to slow down, you’re going to get hurt’.”

Because of the obvious dangers associated with certain adventures, Bayne’s activities are limited by his contract as a way to keep him safe and able to perform his job behind the wheel every weekend. Skydiving and bungee jumping are two specifically restricted pastimes but he certainly does not mind the rules in the slightest.

“Luckily it’s in my contract because everybody’s like ‘hey man, let’s go bungee jumping’ and I’m like ‘no, I can’t. It’s in my contract.’ I don’t have to say I’m scared, you know. They might call me a baby or something but luckily I can use that excuse.”

With these extreme activities being off-limits, Bayne is constantly searching for new adventures that can help him hone his day job skills.

“Racing is something I enjoy. It’s a passion and it’s fun,” he said. “I drove a sprint car for the first time on dirt last year and that was sick. I’d love to race one of those. If I could ever own a race team that’s probably what I’d own one of those just for fun.”

Rallying is something he would also like to pursue in the future.

“I tried to get in a rally car with Travis Pastrana at the New Year’s party but I didn’t succeed. I was trying. I actually tried to get in the driver’s seat but that wasn’t happening,” Bayne said. “I’ve been trying to get in the X Games for next year. That’s like my goal this year. I don’t know if it’ll happen and I don’t have any contacts but I’m working on it. So, if you know anybody with a Rally car, I’ve got a driver.” With new extreme sporting shows on nearly every television network these days, like Pastrana’s Nitro Circus, it is no surprise that Bayne would like to get involved with one of those as well.

“I’m trying to get on Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory. We need to do an episode of that jumping our race car into a foam pit or something.”

Considering his level of ambition, Bayne certainly leads a very busy life. But no matter what off-track activities he pursues, he always has his sites focused on the big prize - the 2010 Nationwide Series season, his first full-time NASCAR season and the ride of his dreams.
