Winning Cars Honored At Daytona
Written by Lindsey Marks

matt-kensethIn honor of this year’s 52nd running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, two of the winning cars from past races will participate in the pace laps before the green flag flies on the Great American Race.

The cars involved are last year’s winner, the No. 17 of Roush Fenway Racing driver Matt Kenseth, and a replica of the No. 27 Chevrolet Junior Johnson took the checkered flag with in the 1960 race.

"The Daytona 500 is full of tradition," Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig said. "We believe that saluting these Daytona 500-winning cars in the pace laps prior to 'The Great American Race' will become another special tradition at Daytona."cale-yarborough

Kenseth earned the first Daytona 500 victory for his team in his familiar yellow and black DeWalt Ford. This year however he will have a new look as he gets behind the wheel of the purple No. 17 Ford sponsored by Crown Royal.

Johnson, meanwhile, drove the No. 27 to a win while being the first driver to implement “drafting” into the race. While competing with Bobby Johns for the top spot, Johnson used the draft and when a blast of air hit Johns’ car it popped out the back window and Johnson went on to win the race by 23 seconds.

With so much history in one event, the tradition continues as two of the great cars to take the checkers in the Daytona 500 will be honored this weekend.
