McDowell And Papis Transfer To 500
Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:25

jimmie-johnsonThe first of the two Gatorade Duels at Daytona put Michael McDowell and Max Papis into Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500.

With only a handful of laps to go, Michael Waltrip and Reed Sorenson were in the two transfer positions for the go-or-go-home drivers. Unfortunately, Waltrip got loose and wrecked bringing out the caution flag.

Under caution, Sorenson came into the pits for fresh tires but missed his pit stall and had to do another lap before coming in to pit. On the restart, Sorenson was in the back of the pack and after the green flag flew something was wrong with the car and he was unable to get up to speed.max-papis

The race got dicey in the final laps and with just over a lap left pole-sitter Mark Martin dropped back to ensure the safety of his race car since he is already locked into his position for the Daytona 500.

In the end, Jimmie Johnson got the win over Kevin Harvick by inches. The win is the first for Johnson whose previous best finish was 3rd in the Duels.

McDowell and Papis earned starting spots in Sunday’s Great American Race by taking the two transfer positions for the go-or-go-home teams. Papis and Todd Bodine were fighting hard for the final spot but Bodine ended up brushing the wall and Papis was able to hold on to the position.
