Wendell Scott was a true pioneer in the sport of auto racing, going against all odds to become the first African-American to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Scott achieved that milestone on Dec. 1, 1963 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Scott made his first official NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start in Spartanburg, South Carolina on March 4, 1961. NASCAR will honor the anniversary of his first start at the Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend by placing a commemorative decal with Scott's image on each competing vehicle.
Sybil Scott, daughter of Wendell Scott, will also be on hand along with NASCAR Drive for Diversity competitor Jason Romero, who was selected last season as the winner of the Wendell Scott Trailblazer Award. MORE NASCAR NEWS
