Nearly a year after NASCAR handed Carl Long one of the most heavy-handed penalties in the sport’s history, Long is still feeling the affects.
On the weekend of the All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway Long was having problems with overheating so his team decided to put in a back-up motor and hand the original motor to NASCAR for inspection.
The overheating motor was an older, worn out engine and during the inspection NASCAR determined the bore was one-one thousandth of an inch too big. Long said the size difference was due to wear.
NASCAR gave Long a 12-race suspension as well as a 12-race suspension for his wife who was listed as the car owner. Meanwhile, his close friend and crew chief received a $200,000 fine. The suspension also kept Long from working his day job on a race team.
