NASCAR is conducting a one-day test session today at the Talladega Superspeedway with the focus being on the spoiler and restrictor plates that will be used for the Aaron's 499 on April 25, 2010. While no official announcement has been made, the sanctioning body is expected to replace the rear wing currently used in Sprint Cup Series competition with the spoiler beginning with the Goody's 500 at Martinsville next week.
Today's open test session will enable teams to try different setups using the spoiler with the COT, as it was once commonly referred to, which has used the rear wing since it's inception. NASCAR officials will also gain data from the test to help determine which restrictor plate to use in the new rules package.
Hardcore race fans are invited to attend the test session, scheduled from 9 a.m. CT until 5 p.m. today, free of charge. The Gadsden and Lincoln grandstands are the only grandstands open with gates opening at 8:45 a.m. CT this morning and closing at 5:15 p.m. CT this evening. The next open test for NASCAR Sprint Cup teams is scheduled for March 23-24 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. These two testing sessions are an exception to the current testing policy in an effort for teams to make the transition as smooth as possible. MORE NASCAR NEWS
