Hardcore race fans attending the Goody's 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway this Sunday, March 28, will witness one of the Navy's oldest squadrons perform the flyover following the National Anthem.
Strike Fighter Squadron Three One, based at the Oceana Naval Air Station near Norfolk, Virginia, will flyover the picturesque 1/2 mile track with F-18 Super Hornets.
The VFA-31 recently returned from an eight-month deployment on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The Tomcatters flew over 6000 hours and 2000 sorties in the skies over Afghanistan over the course of their deployment which supported Operation Enduring Freedom. Strike Fighter Squadron Three One was on the USS Enterprise during the conflict at Pearl Harbor and was involved in the Battles of Wake Island, Marcus Island, Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal and the Eastern Solomons. The squadron has engaged in combat over the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa and China. MORE NASCAR NEWS
