Ryan Newman ran the fastest lap of the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Martinsville Speedway today. With a time of 19.535 seconds at 96.934 mph, Newman out ran Mark Martin who ended up in 2nd place with a lap time of 19.550 seconds.

Marcos Ambrose, Martin’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin completed the top-5.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson, A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top-10.

NASCAR’s premier series will take to the flat track one more time today for qualifying which is scheduled to broadcast on SPEED at 4:30pm ET.

The series is scheduled for two practice session on Saturday before the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 at 1pm ET on Sunday.
