Some wicked weather over the weekend forced many sanctioning bodies to postpone events until Monday.
The completion of the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at the zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC was delayed after the Funny Cars and Top Fuel went only two rounds yesterday before rain followed by more severe weather pummeled the track. The storm produced a tornado, according to witnesses, in nearby Salisbury, NC and hail assaulted various nearby areas.
Meanwhile, in Florida, the Izod IndyCar Racing Series had to postpone the IndyCar Honda St. Petersburg Grand Prix until 10am ET today due to rain. Sure, the open-wheel IndyCars can run in the rain but there is a limit and the downpour created virtual ponds all over the course and the grounds which was deemed unsafe for competition. To make up for the washout, the sanctioning body is allowing anyone, whether they hold a ticket or not, to attend today’s event.
As for NASCAR, the wet weather wreaked havoc in Virginia too and the Sprint Cup Series Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 was moved to today at 12pm ET. Unfortunately, according to Weather.com, the area is expected to get hit with rain again around 3pm today through the night and into tomorrow morning so it remains uncertain whether the race will make it to completion or if it will be shortened. As long as the race is past the half-way point before the rain hits it is considered complete.
So, hardcore race fans will be treated to an extra day of racing and considering the Sprint Cup Series, NHRA and IndyCar are all off this coming weekend for an Easter break, hardcore race fans need all the extra adrenaline they can get.
The Sprint Cup Series will be in the Valley of the Sun for the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway on April 10th while NHRA will head to Houston for the 23rd Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals and the Izod Indy Car Series will return on April 11th for the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy Credit Union at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL.
However, hardcore race fans should know that both the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series will head to Nashville this Friday and Saturday.
