Hamlin Wins Wild Goody's 500
Monday, 29 March 2010 17:10

denny-hamlinDenny Hamlin made a late race move to win the rain-delayed Goody's 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Martinsville Speedway Monday afternoon before an estimated 30,000 hardcore race fans.

Hamlin was leading with less than 10 laps remaining when a caution came out and the Virginia native elected to come down pit road for tires. Hamlin, who lined up ninth on the restart, was making a furious charge to the front when Kyle Busch spun to bring out the final yellow of the day, setting the field up for a green-white-checker finish. Hamlin restarted fourth and passed Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth to take his second consecutive victory at the 1/2 mile oval.

"I can't believe it," Hamlin said after climbing from the #11 Toyota. "I thought it was the end for us."

Hamlin's JGR teammate Joey Logano finished second with Jeff Gordon third, Ryan Newman fourth and Martin Truex, Jr. fifth.

Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson posted a ninth place finish in the Goody's 500 and leaves Martinsville with the points lead after Kevin Harvick suffered mechanical troubles, forcing him to the garage for more than 30 laps while his crew made repairs to the RCR Chevrolet.

Hamlin will undergo surgery this week to repair the ACL tear he suffered during the off-season. Casey Mears is standing by as a backup driver in case Hamlin is not able to drive in the next Cup event.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will visit the Phoenix International Raceway on April 10 after taking off for Easter next Sunday.
