denny-hamlinDenny Hamlin, who underwent knee surgery March 31, received a dose of good medicine today at Texas Motor Speedway, winning the rain delayed Samsung Mobile 500 before an excellent crowd of hardcore race fans.

"I've never seen so many fans on a Monday," Hamlin said in Victory Lane, referring to the loyalty of the thousands of fans who endured weather related delays to see an exciting race.

Contact between Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart initiated a wild 10-car melee with 17 laps remaining in the 500 mile race. The incident collected the cars of Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, A.J. Allmendinger, Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Juan Pablo Montoya.

Several drivers were eliminated from the race as a result of the late race accident, including Carl Edwards.

“Tony was on two tires. Jeff was on four and Jeff kind of got Tony up in the third lane and I was gonna follow Jeff down through the middle," Edwards explained. "There just wasn’t enough time.  Tony started down just a little right there and that’s all it took.  It’s just really hard racing. It’s too bad that many cars got torn up, but our Scotts Fusion was pretty good today. I just hate to end it like that."

Stewart accepted the blame for the crash saying, “It was definitely my fault,” after exiting his damaged car.

Hamlin took the checkered flag ahead of Jimmie Johnson, who made an all out run in the final laps but came up short. Kyle Busch finished third, Kurt Busch fourth and Kasey Kahne fifth.

Today's Samsung 500 saw a record setting 29 lead changes.

Jimmie Johnson retains the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point lead by 108 over Matt Kenseth heading to Talladega.
