jeremy-mayfieldU.S. District Judge Graham Mullen, a federal judge in Charlotte, North Carolina, ruled Tuesday afternoon that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield waived his rights for any claims against the sanctioning body by signing documents as an owner and driver that allowed him to compete in the sport of NASCAR racing.

Mayfield and his wife, Shana, made no comment on the decision. Their attorney, Mark Geragos, is expected to make a statement very soon.

NASCAR released the following statement in reponse to Mullen's decision:

"The U.S. District Court's ruling is a powerful acknowledgment and affirmation of NASCAR's rulebook and its ability to police the sport," the sanctioning body said in a statement. "NASCAR has been very clear with its competitors as to its policies and what is expected of them. NASCAR's comprehensive substance abuse policy, which is among the best and toughest in all of sports, serves the safety of our competitors and fans."

Mayfield has repeatedly denied using methamphetamines, a drug NASCAR says he tested positive for. Mayfield was suspended at Darlington last May after the test was administered at Richmond.
