Pro Motor Engines shattered their MAHLE Engine Builder Showdown record by over a minute in the 11th annual competition to take their fourth consecutive victory in the prestigious event.
The duo of Josh Hypes and Matt Jackling had a complete build time of 18 minutes and 3 seconds which bested the Hendrick Motorsports team of Mike Maiwald and Scott Vester who had a final build time of 20 minutes and 1 second. The Hendrick team fired their motor before that time but had a disconnected fuel line at the 57-second mark of the 1 minute engine run period and had to reconnect it. "We gave it our best," Maiwald said. "Even though we lost, we still feel pretty good for making it to the final round. We want to say thanks to MAHLE for continuing to host this competition and for their support of the engine builders." In addition to the Pro Motor Engines and Hendrick Motorsports teams, Penske Racing Engines, Triad Racing Technologies, Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines and Roush-Yates Engines participated in the event. Roush-Yates were the runner-ups last year to the Pro Motor team made up of Dennis Borem and Darrell Hoffman who had earned the first three consecutive victories. "This competition is intense, no question about it," Hypes said. "This was our first year representing Pro Motor after Dennis (Borem) and Darrell (Hoffman) took the championship the previous three years in a row. We are thrilled to win it again." The winning team earned a cash prize and had their names engraved on the Randy Dorton Memorial Trophy. Dorton was the engine director at Hendrick Motorsports; he lost his life in a plane crash in 2004 that also claimed the life of Ricky Hendrick and eight others. MORE NASCAR NEWS
