Two-time DTM champion is scheduled to test the Red Bull No. 83 today at Virginia International Raceway to assist the team in preparation for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway on June 20, 2010.
Red Bull driver Brian Vickers is undergoing treatment for blood clots and is unable to drive for the remainder of the season. Casey Mears has driven the No. 83 at Dover May 16 and in last weekend's All-Star Race at Charlotte. “With Brian Vickers sidelined for the rest of the season, we needed a road-racing expert to help prepare the No. 83 for Sonoma,” said Jay Frye, Red Bull Racing Team vice president and general manager. “We appreciate Mattias’ willingness to help out and we look forward to his insight.” Ekström is currently second in the DTM point standings and has always dreamed of competing in NASCAR. “It’s no secret that the NASCAR series fascinates me,” Ekström said. “It’s been a long-harbored dream of mine to drive such a car.” The No. 82 Red Bull Toyota team will also participate in today's test session at VIR, which is closed to the public.
