"Rocket" Ryan Newman claimed the pole for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race after clocking in at 187.546 mph in qualifying Thursday evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“That was the most courageous lap I’ve probably ever had around here,” said Newman. All-Star Race winner Kurt Busch took the outside pole with a lap at 187.292 mph. Martin Truex Jr. will line up third on Sunday with Kasey Kahne and Jimmie Johnson completing the top five starters.
David Reutimann, Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer qualified sixth through tenth. Reed Sorenson, Max Papis, David Stremme and Mike Bliss failed to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600. The Coca-Cola 600 will be broadcast live on Fox with coverage beginning at 5:45 pm ET Sunday afternoon. MORE NASCAR NEWS
