Chip Ganassi has become the first team owner in history to win both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year.
Ganassi's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jamie McMurray took the victory at Daytona in the Great American Race back in February and Dario Franchitti who drives one of Ganassi's IndyCar rides got the win at the Brickyard today. Franchitti has drunk the milk in Victory Lane at Indy twice now. "I'm a lucky man," Ganassi said after today's race when asked about winning both events.
The Indy 500 came down to fuel mileage as the 200 laps wound down and a last lap crash that resulted in the No. 24 of Mike Conway flying through the air and hitting the wall. The car was left upside down with only the cockpit intact; Conway was extracated from the wreckage and was airlifted to a hospital with a right leg injury. The caution flag flew and Franchitti glided to the stripe to take the checkered flag with Dan Wheldon in 2nd place. Danica Patrick earned a 5th place finish and will try her hand at stock car racing again in June. MORE NASCAR NEWS
