Jimmie Johnson earned his 4th victory this season and his first ever at a road course in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway.
As the laps were winding down, and cautions were plaguing the finale, Marcos Ambrose looked to make his way to Victory Lane for the first time in his NASCAR career but after shutting off his car under caution he could not get it to fire again and lost track position for the restart. Jimmie Johnson was right there to reap the benefits of that costly mistake. After dominating earlier in the day, driver No. 48 gratefully accepted the lead and ran away with it. Robby Gordon and Kevin Harvick were duking it out for second but neither driver had anything for the leader.
"It feels so good," Johnson said about his first road course win before giving a nice hello to his wife who is at home and unable to travel due to the impending due date of their first child. He also gave Father's Day wishes to his father and recognized his mother since today is her birthday. Robby Gordon ended up besting Harvick for that 2nd spot but Happy hung in their for third. Previous Sonoma winner Kasey Kahne ended up fourth just in front of Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon in fifth. Ambrose brought the No. 47 home in sixth after his costly mistake under caution. Greg Biffle, Boris Said, Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top-10. Next weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will head to New Hampshire for the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at Loudon. The race is scheduled to broadcast on TNT beginning at 1pm ET. MORE NASCAR NEWS
