Joe Nemechek was the fastest in the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice today at Chicagoland Speedway with a 30.495 second lap at 177.078mph barely beating Casey Mears for the top spot. David Stremme finished the practice in third place with Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson ending up fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the second of the two practice sessions, Juan Pablo Montoya proved his strength by topping the charts with a 29.834 second lap at 181.001mph. Montoya's Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate Jamie McMurray was second in the session with a 29.941 second lap. Roush Fenway Racing drivers Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards ended the session in third and fifth, respectively, sandwiching new father and defending champion Johnson in between them.
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing was on top of the speed charts again in Sprint Cup qualifying when McMurray took the pole with a blistering 29.421 second lap at 183.542mph. Johnson took the outside pole proving that this week's events in his personal life will certainly not affect his on track performance. Tony Stewart, Biffle and Sam Hornish Jr. rounded out the top-5. Gordon, David Reutimann, Paul Menard, Martin Truex Jr. and Montoya completed the top-10.
