Baby Boom In NASCAR Continues

ryan-newmanJust over a year ago Matt and Katie Kenseth welcomed their daughter Kaylin which fairly set off the NASCAR baby boom. Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards both announced their wives were expecting and a baby boy and a baby girl, respectively, came along at the start of the season for the two drivers.

Just after clinching his fourth consecutive championship, Jimmie Johnson and wife Chandra let it be known that they were expecting and then his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and wife Ingrid also announced a new addition to the family. Johnson welcomed Genevieve Marie only a few weeks ago with baby boy Gordon scheduled to make his appearance next month. Juan Pablo Montoya also became a father for the third time this month.

Jamie McMurray earned the victory at Indy this past weekend and his visibly pregnant wife Christy was by his side to kiss the bricks. There has been a lot of speculation since the race after McMurray referred to the baby as a "he" in his post-race interview but the couple have yet to officially announce the sex of the new addition.

And, just as the baby boom seemed to slow down, two more couples have announced they are expecting. Ryan and Krissie Newman as well as Sam and Crystal Hornish are expecting in December. This will be the first child for the Newmans and the second for the Hornishes who already have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, Addison.

With more and more babies coming the garage talk seems to revolve more around diapers and feedings than race strategy but the situation is another reminder of how NASCAR is a family sport which truly sets it apart from the others. Congratulations to all the new parents and parents-to-be.
