There’s nothing like home cooking to make a NASCAR driver happy. This week’s stop in Charlotte provides most drivers and crews the rare opportunity to sleep in their own beds and be surrounded by the comforts of home. For fans in the heart of NASCAR country, the race should provide a sharper focus on who is planning to win the Chase and who should be planning for next year.
If he can win Saturday, Kurt Bush would be the fist ever cup driver to sweep all three major races at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a single season. As the Chase hits the halfway point, if anyone’s going to put a dent in Jimmie Johnson’s momentum, it needs to start now. Several teams remain is serious contention, but now is definitely time to go or go home.
One factor that could impact the race outcome is Mother Nature. Considering the 500 mile race will start at 7 p.m., temperatures could drop as much as 30 degrees between the first green and checkered flag. That means crew chiefs will have to make constant adjustments to stay ahead of the changing track conditions. This is especially true toward the end, when crews will have limited opportunities to come through for their driver.
Commenting on this week’s race are Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, and Kurt Bush.
