Denny Hamlin led the most laps but it was Carl Edwards who took the win in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Edwards, winner of Saturday's Wypall 200 Nationwide event at PIR, broke a 70-race winless streak with his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory since November 2008.
The Roush Fenway Racing driver took the lead from Hamlin on lap 266 of the 312-lap event and pulled out to a more than a four second advantage at the finish. Hamlin, conserving fuel and hoping for a caution, gave up second to make a green flag stop with 14 laps remaining. The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota took on two tires and fuel in 7.6 seconds, rejoining the field in 19th. Hamlin led 190 laps and finished 12th, narrowing his lead in the Chase to 15 points going into the final race at Homestead next Sunday. “It’s pretty disappointing,” said a dejected Hamlin after the race. Ryan Newman finished second followed by Joey Logano, Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson. Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray completed the top-10. MORE NASCAR NEWS
