NASCAR may replace the current Sprint Cup points system with one that awards points according to finishing positions, an anonymous source close to the situation told the Associated Press Monday.
According to the AP report, NASCAR is considering changing to a system that would award 43 points to the race winner and reduce each finishing position by one point. For example, a driver finishing second would receive 42 points with the third-place finisher receiving 41 points. Officials of the sanctioning body have been holding meetings recently with individual teams to discuss the change. While several announcements regarding the 2011 season will be made when Sprint Cup testing begins Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR is expected to announce a new points system during next week's Charlotte Motor Speedway media tour.
