tony-stewartTony Stewart may have to return to Australia to face charges as a result of an incident that occurred at Sydney Speedway on January 14, 2011, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. The NASCAR driver was in the country to compete in sprint car races over the winter.

Stewart reportedly threw a helmet at track co-owner Brett Morris after confronting the race promoter over the condition of the racing surface. Stewart and Morris exchanged punches, according to eyewitness accounts, with Stewart being taken away in the front seat of a police car.

The two-time NASCAR champion was detained in a holding cell, according to the report, and was allowed to return to the United States the next day.

Morris is scheduled to undergo surgery this week for a broken eye socket.

"I don't care who Tony Stewart is - if he wants to come to Australia and throw a helmet, he'd better learn to fight," Morris told The Inside Line.

The police investigation is on ongoing and the possibility exists that Stewart could be charged in the matter.

"I don't want to say anything [about the situation relating to the charges being laid]," said Morris. "I'm sure you understand due process."
