Ford drivers grabbed the top four starting spots for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 during qualifying Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Matt Kenseth laid down a record breaking lap of 188.884 mph to earn his first pole award at the 1.5-mile track in Sin City.
"It is good to be on pole and I look forward to the race on Sunday," Kenseth said. "We worked really hard on race practice today and had a lot of speed and in qualifying trim we obviously had a lot of speed."
Marcos Ambrose narrowly missed his first NASCAR Sprint Cup pole and starts Sunday's race on the outside of the front row.
"I am thrilled for Richard Petty and thrilled for me and thrilled for Stanley," said Ambrose. "I took a chance and I really stuck my neck out to see if I had what it took."
Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five.
Joey Logano, A. J. Allmendinger, Ryan Newman, Martin Truex, Jr. and Mark Martin line up sixth through tenth on Sunday’s grid.
Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan had one of the fastest cars in an earlier practice session but spun out during his qualifying run and starts 42nd.
Brian Keselowski, who started 12th in the Daytona 500, failed to qualify for the second week in a row.
