hamlin-kenseth-michiganDenny Hamlin won Sunday's Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan International Speedway after being the first off pit road during a late-race caution and holding off Matt Kenseth for the final five laps to notch his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the 2011 season.

"We got it working at the end," Hamlin said. “We got it done."

Kenseth made a last-lap attempt at Hamlin to no avail.

“I just couldn’t quite get Denny. After restarts we were kind of slow and tight in the middle which isn’t a good thing to be in a short shootout. We had a great car in the long run though. I tried what I could to get around him but I slipped on the restart. I just needed more laps to get it going.”

The final caution of the day came out on lap 191 when Dale Earnhardt, Jr. hit the wall in turns one and two after he had a right-side tire go down.

Carl Edwards, who won Saturday's Nationwide race, led much of the field down pit road on lap 193 with Hamlin the first to exit en route to his second career win at the two-mile Michigan track. The race restarted on lap 196 with the No. 11 in first followed by Kenseth, Edwards, Paul Menard and Tony Stewart. Hamlin crossed the finish line 0.281 seconds ahead of Kenseth as an estimated crowd of 88,000 looked on.

Kyle Busch, Menard and Edwards finished third through fifth, respectively.

The 200-lap race featured 21 lead changes among 12 drivers and saw five caution flags for a total of 18 laps.

Edwards continues to lead the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup standings and heads to Infineon with a 20-point advantage over Kevin Harvick.
