NASCAR issued penalties to all three Joe Gibbs Racing teams Tuesday after discovering unapproved oil pans on the cars of Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano during inspection on Friday, June 17 at Michigan International Speedway.
JGR crew chiefs Mike Ford, Dave Rogers and Greg Zipadelli each received a $50,000 fine in addition to being placed on probation until December 31, 2011. Gibbs Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Jimmy Makar and all three car chiefs, Chris Gillin, Wesley Sherrill and Jason Shapiro, were placed on probation until December 31, 2011 as well.
The penalties are a result of the three teams violating Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in an event does not conform to NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20 of the NASCAR rule book, or has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the event); and 20-5.5.4A (oil pan, failure to submit component) of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rule Book.
