What a wild and wooly weekend of left, right racing! It all started with the Nationwide series from Road America, which honestly seemed pretty darn tame for the most part until we got down to the last 16 miles.
At this point, it was just incredible; with an awesome racing display being put on between “Mad Max” Papas and Jacques Villeneuve for third. Then over the three green-white-checkered attempts, some of the drivers “lost their minds” and drama ran rampant. All of this right down to apparent winner to be Justin Algaier running out of gas after the field was frozen after the white flag flew, then a caution.
The winner not being declared for several minutes afterwards added to it, while there was nearly some “good old Saturday night” short track stuff going on along pit road………whew!
Fast Forward to Sonoma, California on Sunday, and it was like a straight continuation of Saturday. Guys spinning other guys out, retribution for the same, and just some flat out awesome action right down to the finish of the race! I’ll be the first to tell you that I am NOT much of a road racing fan, but how could you not just love the way this weekend went…… It might have turned my feelings a bit for the positive. If the two remaining Nationwide road course races go like this and Watkins Glen is more of the same, I might just become a new fan of twisty turny racing!
I also wanted to give a shout out to Kyle Busch, maybe the current racer the most like the old barnstorming guys from days gone by. Even with what must be a crazy schedule already, he took his Super Late Model team up to Berlin Raceway(Mi.) for the “Rowdy’s Revenge 251. Mr. Busch set fast time, and overcame the invert to win the race against a pretty stellar field. It was nice to see ex-truck racer Johnny Benson finish second to Kyle, and very young, but highly talented Chase Elliott finish fifth. I love RACERS WHO RACE!
Well that’s all for now, until next week keep the shiny part up!
