David Ragan came close to winning the Daytona 500 in February but was black-flagged while leading with two laps remaining.
Ragan and crew chief Drew Blickensderfer returned to Daytona International Speedway this weekend looking for redemption with Ragan's first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory.
They accomplished exactly that as Roush teammate Matt Kenseth pushed Ragan's No. 6 to the win on the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish after three multi-car accidents carried the race into overtime.
"We've been so close so many times, we're finally here," Ragan said. What better place to do it than Daytona, it couldn't be any better."
Kenseth finished second followed by Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch.
Polesitter Mark Martin was a contender until being caught in one of the late race incidents while outside front row starter Trevor Bayne's day ended after tagging the wall on lap four.
Carl Edwards, who had the point lead at the start of the race, spun on lap 24 and made contact with the inside retaining wall. Edwards finished 37th and lost the point lead to Kevin Harvick.
“I was being aggressive and kind of having a little bit of fun, but that’s what we decided we were gonna try to do," Edwards said. "We had the points lead and not a lot ot lose, so it’s no big deal. It is what it is. If you take the last five restrictor-plate races and average them out, we’ve done very well.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series now heads to Kentucky for their first appearance in the Bluegrass State.
