Don’t know what it is, but 2011 has been great to drivers looking for their first Sprint Cup win. Marcos Ambrose, who has made a solid transition to NASCAR, made it all pay off Monday at Watkins Glen, the fifth driver this season to capture his first win. Ambrose is also NASCAR’s 15th different winner of 2011.
The Chase battle took a turn when it seemed we had an idea on who would make the Chase but Watkins Glen made things a bit more difficult for some drivers. For Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart, who are at the bottom of the points, both had bad days while Chase hopeful David Ragan now falls outside the top-20.
Ambrose’s win puts him one point behind 20th and within reach of being eligible for the Chase.
We have a new point leader in Kyle Busch. It’s now down to the final four races before we know who is in the Chase and who is going to be prepping for a Chase run next year. Expect no different in Michigan.
