Mark Martin captured the pole for Sunday's Good Sam 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race in qualifying Saturday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway. Martin, set to vacate the seat of the No. 5 at season’s end, edged his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson to earn his 51st career pole win.
Martin lapped the 2.66-mile oval at 181.367 mph shortly after Johnson posted a lap of 181.360.
Clint Bowyer, Trevor Bayne and Jeff Gordon completed the top five.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., Paul Menard, David Ragan, Carl Edwards and Ryan Newman line up sixth through 10th on Sunday's grid.
Geoffrey Bodine, Scott Speed, T.J. Bell and Josh Wise did not make the field.
Sunday's race is set to take the green at 2:15 p.m. ET with live coverage on ESPN.
