"Rocket" Ryan Newman claimed his second pole of the season in qualifying for Sunday's 300-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Newman's lap around the "Magic Mile" at 136.497 mph broke the existing track record of 135.922 mph held by Brad Keselowski. It is Newman's seventh pole at NHMS.
"This track is the birthplace of track position and qualifying great is extremely important obviously for where we are in the points and this time of year. It is really difficult to pass. Last time we were on the pole here, we led a lot of laps and we won. I am hoping we can duplicate that again."
Kasey Kahne starts on the outside pole and Jeff Gordon third with Kurt Busch fourth and Martin Truex, Jr. fifth. Kahne and Gordon also laid down record breaking laps during Friday's qualifying session.
Joey Logano, Paul Menard, Kevin Harvick, point leader Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle line up sixth through 10th on Sunday's starting grid.
Ryan Newman made it abundantly clear again Friday that he knows the fast way around New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Sunday's Sprint Cup race will be live on ESPN with coverage beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET.
