Early last month, Red Horse Racing announced that last season’s Camping World Truck Series champion Johnny Benson was losing his ride in the No. 1 Toyota Tundra due to a lack of sponsorship. Now, Red Horse Racing has announced that the No. 1 will be on the track at O’Reilly Raceway Park (ORP) this weekend, but with a different driver. 19-year old Caitlin Shaw has been named the new pilot of Benson’s former ride.
Shaw will reach a personal goal by making her first Truck Series start this weekend. “It’s such a huge accomplishment for me to be able to compete in this series,” Shaw said. “Driving in NASCAR has always been a goal of mine, and it’s exciting to see some of the hard work pay off.” The New Mexico native has over a decade of racing under her belt. The majority of her experience is in USAC Midgets and she has attended a couple of driving schools. This year Shaw has been a regular at Hickory Motor Speedway in the Late Model division and she currently sits 13th in the point standings. To solve the lack of sponsorship issue, Red Horse Racing also announced a number of new sponsors for the No. 1 including: Sparco USA, Toyota Racing Development, GirlRacer.co.uk, Community Healthcare Service, Piloti Driving Shoes, Calico Coatings, Racing Radios and K&N Engineering. So with new sponsors and a new driver, the No. 1 Toyota Tundra will make its first start since the WinStar World Casino 400 in Texas seven weeks ago when Benson finished 4th. Shaw is hoping that her experience at ORP will give her confidence during her first race in such a competitive series. “I can’t wait to get on the track, especially at O'Reilly Raceway Park,” Shaw said. “It’s a great opportunity that Toyota and Red Horse have made possible for me. I consider ORP to be one of my home tracks because I’ve been there testing and racing so often with the midget it just feels like home. I think that will help me to get past the nerves allowing me to focus on running with the other trucks and earning some respect from the veteran drivers.” The AAA Insurance 200 presented by JD Byrider at ORP is schedule to air on Speed at 7:30 pm ET tonight.
